Overview

The application profile documents metadata definitions and usage within the Calhoun institutional repository.  Metadata in Calhoun follows a qualified form which is a prefix indicating the namespace, an element, and an optional qualifier.

EXAMPLE: dc.contributor.author

Namespaces are defined as sets of qualified metadata elements.  The default namespace used in Calhoun is derived from the Dublin Core standard (http://dublincore.org/). Schemas are defined as sets of qualified metadata elements that may be drawn from one or more namespaces used to describe a specific type of document or object.

Introduction to the Calhoun Application Profile

Calhoun currently uses the following namespaces:

Combinations of qualified metadata elements from these namespaces define the schemas used to describe different objects in Calhoun, because different kinds of objects call for different metadata:

  • Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
  • Articles, Pre-Prints
  • Technical and Research Reports (NPS Reports)
  • Instructional Media Elements (IMEs)
  • Patents
  • Other documents

Namespaces

Namespaces are sets of metadata elements that begin with a common prefix. The dublin core (dc) namespace contains basic bibliographic and descriptive metadata elements, while other namespaces contain specifically purposed metadata elements.  Elements from multiple namespaces can be used in combination to define a schema for a particular type or collection of items (see Schemas).

A note about Lang Code: During batch metadata import, it is important that elements and qualifiers below marked en_US include the Lang Code in the .csv table.  EXAMPLE: dc.publisher should appear as: dc.publisher[en_US]. When Lang Code is marked null do not include it.  EXAMPLE dc.contributor.advisor needs no Lang Code.
